For more than two decades, Peter has achieved numerous design awards and honors, highlighted by the coveted Rome Prize Fellowship in Landscape Architecture and Fellowship with the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). His career is marked with strong credentials in the art of design, stewardship, and social responsibility. With ideals of restraint, elegance, and simplicity, Peter strives to achieve a timeless design quality for each project.
Peter’s understanding of urban design is one that blurs the boundaries of landscape architecture and architecture. This approach is especially influential in the historical sites with significant architecture that most attract Peter’s attention, such as the award-winning design of the Illinois Institute of Technology Campus, which elegantly reinterprets the landscape designs of Alfred Caldwell on a campus designed by Mies van der Rohe, and also in his design of N. Burnham Park at Soldier Field, where he added 17 new acres of parkland through the innovative use of green roof techniques over a parking garage.
In 2011, Peter was recognized by the AIA with a Collaborative Achievement Award for a consitent attention throughout his career to the integration of land and architecture. In 2010, Peter was recognized in the Chicago Tribune as a ‘Chicagoan of the Year in Architecture.’ Peter’s work on the Gary Comer Youth Center green roof won a national design award from the ASLA and his work on the Uptown Normal Circle was commended with a Presidential award from the Illinois Chapter in 2010.
Peter was profoundly influenced by his mentor, internationally known landscape architect, Daniel Urban Kiley. Peter worked as an associate under Kiley for three years and the renowned landscape architect’s design approach and philosophy is embedded in Peter’s work to this day.
Volunteering his time generously, Peter currently serves on two Chicago mayoral design committees and lends his experience to the U.S. General Services Administration as a National Peer and to ASLA and AIA juries. In 2010, Peter dedicated expertise as a member of the Sustainable Cities Design Team for the American Architectural Foundation, which gathered design professionals from around the country to assist municipalites with specific design and planning issues.
