Shanghai Nature Museum (Shanghai, China)

Hoerr Schaudt designed the landscape and public plazas of this exciting new cultural institution designed by Perkins + Will. The museum’s relationship to its site represents the harmonious togetherness of man and nature, an important concept in Chinese culture. The landscape design incorporates a sweeping green roof that rises with the nautilus shape of the building, and links the museum with an adjacent sculpture park. A ‘primordial forest,’ which consists of wild and untamed planted landforms edged with granite rocks, is one of several elements designed as both learning experience and social space.

Paine Art Center Gardens (Oshkosh, WI)

The Paine Art Center and Gardens is an historic estate with a wide variety of changing art exhibitions within the estate’s galleries and garden. Outdoors, the Paine maintains and enhances numerous display gardens as galleries of horticulture with varied designs and thousands of plant specimens. As phase one of this project, in conjunction with a carriage house renovation and conservatory construction by Vinci Hamp Architects, Hoerr Schaudt renovated the entry drive, autocourt / pedestrian plaza, and herb garden. These improvements enhance the center’s circulation and sense of arrival. This phase of the project was completed this fall, with the exception of the plantings, which will be installed in the spring. Phase two of this project will include a new formal garden adjacent to the conservatory featuring a sunken garden, formal pergola, lush plantings and water features.
